RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Public health issues related to the land application of biosolids. My current research is focused on potential pathogens present in human and/or animal waste. We are developing methods to effectively recover bacteria, viruses and parasites from raw sludge and treated biosolids. Once organisms have been recovered, we are testing viability/infectivity methods to assess risk. These methods include traditional bacterial culture; vital staining, excystation and cell culture for Cryptosporidium parvum; vital staining and excystation for Giardia lamblia and microscopic examination of Ascaris ova. In addition, the protozoa viability assays are compared to the gold standard method of animal infectivity.
