MLS Guest Lecture Series

The MLS Department is pleased to host a series of lectures on various subjects of interest to MLS students and others in the health care field. Please watch this space for information on the guest lecture for National Laboratory Week in April 2003!

April 18, 2002. Dr. Emmanuel Mdurvwa, of the New Hampshire Public Health Laboratories, gave a lecture entitled "Clinical Aspects of Critical Agents of Bioterrorism". The seminar covered a brief description of bioterrorism agents, such as Anthrax, Plague, Tularemia, Botulism, Smallpox, Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers and Brucellosis, taking into consideration their cause, transmission routes, clinical symptoms, and treatment.

April 18, 2001. Dr. AuBuchon, of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, discussed new developments in blood-banking in his lecture "Better Transfusion Through Chemistry", including recent efforts to manufacture synthetic blood and the difficulties that have to be overcome.

April 15, 1999. Tom Maciag, Ph.D., lectured on "Cell and Molecular Mechanisms of Angiogenesis." Dr. Maciag is the director of the Center for Molecular Medicine at Maine Medical Center, and a key researcher in the field of angiogenesis.

November 17, 1998. Kevin Stone, MBA, and Executive Director of Managed Care and Contracting at the Hitchcock Clinic lectured on "Chronic Illness in a Managed Care World: New Challenges for Patients and Health Care Providers." He discussed economic and ethical considerations, and new approaches adopted to address them.

April 15, 1998. Dr. Michael Laposata, Director of Clinical Laboratories at Massachusetts General Hospital, lectured on "Providing More Than Just Results: What the Clinicians Have Been Waiting For." He discussed his laboratory's approach to ordering, performing and interpreting tests in today's managed care environment.
